Norkring aims to surpass coverage barriers with creative solutions

Availability is everything, and all of us are dependent on good coverage each and every day. Norkring can provide stable and reliable coverage to places that continue to lack it. With Norkring Extended Coverage, our aim is to close the gap between 4G and areas where there is no coverage, be it in the air, water, along the coastline or in sparsely populated areas.

Norkring aims to surpass coverage barriers with creative solutions

“We want to meet a need that exists in places where no solution is currently available,” said Vivi Nyseter-Østby, Sales Director at Norkring. She is leading the efforts to develop a network that uses mesh technology and various media solutions. Mesh is a flexible, self-configuring and self-healing network. Data moves between the individual mesh network terminals so that there’s always connectivity between two devices as long as they are both connected to the network.

With this service, Norkring can provide broadband/internet coverage through pairing - or connectivity - in places that lack 4G coverage today. The solution can be used in multiple ways and will be of interest to a number of industries.

For example, Norkring Extended Coverage can provide coverage for a drone for filming and live-stream transmission in inaccessible areas and thereby provide almost real-time information to emergency services. It can also provide coverage for surveillance along the coasts, mountains and deep valleys, identifying malfunctions along power lines, facilitate real-time transmission of video in emergency situations and help the media cover events in remote areas.

We demonstrated the solution in connection with the Arctic Drone Event on Svalbard, where Norkring provided connectivity and enabled live video transmissions in the heart of Billefjorden, both by Nordenskkjöldbreen and Pyramiden, where there is no mobile data coverage. Norkring’s solution was also used to provide temporary WiFi access for the conference delegation during the tour of Pyramiden on Svalbard.

“It’s really fun to have made the first-ever mobile phone call from Pyramiden possible,” Nyseter-Østby said excitedly. She shared the experience where the former director of the Norwegian Civil Aviation Authority, Svein Olav Aasen from Bodø, rang his wife at home through Norkring’s network, boasting that “It was like talking face to face!”

Norkring’s service can be of interest to several industries and actors that need to establish and extend networking and connectivity, both permanently and temporarily.

“We can respond at short notice and tailor communications solutions that have been tested in advance and undergone simulations by our highly talented radio planning staff.” Nyseter-Østby.

With the company’s experience from NRK’s ‘slow-TV’ productions such as Sommeråpent fra Skibladner, Besseggen, Galdhøpiggen and Monsen minutt for minutt, where it was the primary communications provider, Norkring has been able to test the service, its scope and possibilities.

“We can respond at short notice and tailor communications solutions that have been tested in advance and undergone simulations by our highly talented radio planning staff,” Nyseter-Østby added.

Her recommendation is simple: If you’re thinking of a network that requires connectivity and need help planning and rigging it, just call Norkring.
